Field Day: Smart Glasses and Woodforce in the Machine Cabin

In this blog, I want to share one meaningful day from the field – a moment when ideas turned into practice, and testing took us one step closer to a working solution. I went out to test smart glasses in a real setting – inside a forestry machine cabin, integrated with the Woodforce task management system.

A Cold but Bright Start to the Day

The mood for the field day was excited – with a touch of nervous anticipation. I had fully charged the glasses, installed the necessary apps, and connected the required credentials to Woodforce. The goal was to test how well the smart glasses perform inside the machine: in noise, shifting light conditions, and whether the user could operate Woodforce by voice – without interrupting the workflow.

Voice Control – Surprisingly Smooth

The first pleasant surprise was how well the voice commands worked, even with the machine running. Background noise didn't interfere much, and the commands were picked up better than expected. I was able to scroll through the task list, open individual assignments, and check job details – all hands-free, without taking my hands off the controls. Bluetooth calls also worked flawlessly when a colleague phoned in.

A New Way to Experience Woodforce

When you're used to using Woodforce on a computer or smartphone, operating it through smart glasses brings a whole new dimension. I was able to keep my eyes on the machine and surroundings, while having a visual checklist and workflow visible right in my field of view. It reduced errors and improved focus. I saw exactly what needed to be done next – and even captured progress photos directly through the glasses.

What I Also Learned

Of course, there were areas to improve. Scrolling and navigating took some getting used to, but once I got the hang of it, short voice commands worked well, and the work didn't slow down because of the tech.

The Bottom Line: Yes, It Works

All in all, the day confirmed that we're on the right path. Smart glasses bring real added value to fieldwork – and when combined with a tool like Woodforce, the result is truly powerful. This test day provided valuable practical insights that we will use in further development and customer training.

It's through days like this – in the forest, with real work – that solutions are born which truly work where it matters most.
